Cleaning Roman Blinds and Roller Blinds is a fairly straight forward process, follow these simple steps that are recommended by the manufacturers and you will immediately renew your roller blinds and roman blinds back to their original condition. Depending on what material your blinds are made from generally determines what type of washing and cleaning products we can use.

Remove your roller blind from its brackets and unwind completely so that you expose the tubing, this is generally made from aluminium or plastic dependant on the manufacturer. Now when you are looking at the tubing you will see that it will have 2 end caps, these will either be for a spring system which has long been a traditional roller blind or the much new chain operated roller blinds. Generally there is only 2 ways that the material is attached to the roller blind, this is with tape or the material if it is an older blind will have a spline at the top section. Either way it is very easy to remove the material.

Lay the blind out flat on your kitchen table, remove from the roller so that the tubing now is totally free from the material, the first process we are going to do is steaming, now you can either hire a cheap steamer or alternatively I have found the following process work just as well, put your cooking steam on and lay to flannel or cleaning materials in the top, allow them to become saturated , drain and then use them to gently wipe the blind, this should be done on both sides when cleaning your roller blinds.

The second process we will use is spot cleaning, use diluted eucalyptus oil and rub any hard to remove spots, re-attach material to your roller blind and re-install, you will now have a new fresh looking roller blind

How to clean roman blinds is basically the same process , excepting that generally with a roman blind there is more preparation, follow these steps that have been used by qualified installers and you will be guaranteed a smooth and simple way of completing the task of cleaning your roman blinds

Let the roman blind go down to its fullest length, now go behind the roman blind and undo the cords from the bottom batton, the amount of cords will depend on the width of the blind. Now grab a ladder or chair and go to the top of the roman blind, most roman blinds use Velcro to attach to the headboard, peel the material from headboard and lay flat on a large table or flooring area.

Repeat the same process that you used for cleaning your roller blinds and now re-attach to the headboard, you will now need to thread and tie the cords as they were previously installed. This should be a simple process as the cords will still be hanging in the same position that they were when you removed the roman blind.

Another easy way to remove marks from roller blinds or roman blinds is to use a simple pencil rubber, this often will just make the mark magically disappear.

How to make your own roller blinds , is this really possible to make your own roller blinds at home and save hundreds and even thousand of dollars on furnishing your new or existing home. The answer simply is yes, let me show you an easy way of furnishing your home with roller blinds that will make you the envy of your friends and neighbours for a fraction of the cost of purchasing either on-line or direct from your nearest supplier

The very first item that you must consider when making your own roller blinds is what type of material should I use, there are basically 3 types of material that roller blinds are manufactured from, blockout roller blind material , translucent roller blind material and screen roller blind material. I have personally decorated 1000′s of homes over the past years and find that a combination of blockout and screen roller blinds always compliments each other and provides clean lines and image for your existing home or new home.

All roller blind material is a minimum width of 2400mm wide, and this enables us to work out our fabric requirements very easily, first off measure your existing window width x drop, for example if your window is 2100mm wide and 2100m drop , we already know the width of the material is 24000mm , so we can disregard our width measure and only concentrate on the drop measurment of 2100mm, now whatever height your window is add an extra 300mm, this is used to allow for hems and cover the roller blind tube that we will use.

So if our roller blind measurment is 2100mm x 2100mm we will need approximately 2400mm of material, so we now know that we require 2400mm of material for this window, repeat this process for the windows that need covering and add all the meterages up to give you a total requirement of material. You might be now saying “ok i know how much material I need but where do i purchase this from’. You will be surprised that your local fabricator of blind will sell you material at a greately reduced cost, also there are many material fabricators online that will now sell direct to the public at wholesale prices.

Once you have ordered your material you will now need to order the roller blind tubing and componentry, ie the chain drives and chain systems, you should basically type a work order with sizes of the tubes that you need and the length of chain that you require. A little trick when ordering your tubing that will save money is to order your tubing 30mm shorter than what you need , as when you add the brackets and chain drives system this will bring it back out to your required width.

Now here comes the easy part for creating your new roller blinds, if your window is 2100mm wide x 2100mm drop, cut the material 30mm less in the width and allow 300mm on the drop of the material. By doing this you have created a piece of material that is 2070mm wide by 2400mm drop, now on the top of the tube run some double side tape and repeat this on the top of the material. position material squarely on the tube and roll up so that you have at least 300mm showing at the bottom.

Again for your new roller blind use some double side tape on the bottom of the blind and turn it up 50mm, this forms the bottom hem, allow to settle for 24hours and assemble the chain drive unit and chain, install brackets on windows and hang blind, you have now created a brand new roller blind at half the price of a regular roller blind supplier

Swag curtains are one of the most traditional finishes that you can introduce onto your window coverings, intricate in design and generally create that wow factor when you enter the room. Swag curtains or swags and tails have long been deemed as the ultimate in window soft furnishings providing an immediate statement with choices of fabrics and design only limited to your imagination.

Traditional swag curtains

To make your own pinch pleated curtains in easy to follow steps Click Here!

Swag Curtains can either be made with several different styles and shapes, the most common finish is the traditional swag in which each swag overlaps itself across the width of the window. Another classical swag curtains are the regal finish, you basically have an odd amount of swags on your window, 2 will overlap to the right, 2 to the left and the centre or regal swag overlap both swags either side.

One of my favorite swag curtains designs that I have used many times on my clients is called the modern swag, it is basically a single swag that can go from one side of the window to the other, approximately 1800mm or 6 feet in width, and this is an impressive swag to say the least. This particular design is also very unique in the sense that if you use a wide enough material you can basically create the swag with no joins.

Manufacturers are now supplying so many contemporary materials that lend themselves to being fully used on swag curtains, the beauty of creating a this type of curtain is that you can have the tail part of the swag in a totally different color, this is often referred to as contrast lined. The lining that is used on the back of swag curtains can also be a contrasting color.

When installing swags they are 90% of the time installed above the window, approximately 20cms, this allows for maximum height on window and prevents too much natural light loss. Your drapes or curtains are then installed underneath the existing swag curtains.
