Cafe Curtains

Cafe Curtains can be dated back to the early 1500’s, a useful curtain designed to create a privacy aspect between the person standing at the sink and any passer byes or onlookers. Cafe curtains of today come in many shapes , sizes and colours. Traditionally a cafe curtain was always made from a lace material or alternatively a heavy textured material.

As times have changed and people taste has evolved we see many Cafe Curtains now made from light sheer voile material or alternatively light cotton material with suitable patterns. Lace still forms a large of part of Cafe Curtains design but now we have several more choices to entice our imagination. When I look at a clients windows to decorate with a Cafe Curtain the first thing i try to maintain is the functionality of the area,ie this is a wet area with alot of splashing of water.

Cafe Curtains material must be suitable for wet areas, that is why most of the material used is either 100 Nylon or 100% Polyster, if using a lace Cafe Curtains you can generally purchase these as a ready-made item from your department store of alternatively if you go to a Curtain Shop many will have these on a continuous roll that you can cut off at your desired width. Generally when buying lace Cafe Curtains you will purchase a small top section approximately 30cm in depth and then a bottom section approximately 64cm in depth.

Another material that is widely used is a pattern curtain material, these are usually custom made Cafe Curtains that have been specifically measured and made to the exact measurements of your window, one advantage of doing it this way is that you can basically introduce any colour or design into you kitchen area. Generally these curtains have a rod pocket at the top and a small 5cm hemm at the bottom

Also one of the main benefits of any material that you use in you kitchen area is make sure that it is fully washable or dry cleanable as the kitchen curtains will be washed on an average 4times more than any other curtains in your home. You should also ensure that when the curtains are made or installed that they are completely free and clear of any hotplates or open gas grills
